What is a game of conkers?

A game of conkers is a traditional british two-player game played with horse chestnuts, or conkers, on knotted strings.

Rules of the game: Both players have one conker on a knotted string. The players take turns at hitting each other's conkers. The player whose conker is to be hit wraps the conker string around her hand and lets it hang down at the height specified by the opponent, the striker. The conker must be held perfectly still. The striker wraps her conker string around the hand, takes the conker in the other hand and draws it back for the strike. Releasing the conker she swings it down by the string, trying to hit the opponent's conker. If she misses she is allowed up to two further goes. If the strings should tangle the first player to call "strings" or "snags" gets an extra shot. The game is won when one player destroys the other player's conker. If a player drops her conker or it is knocked from her hand, the other player can shout "stamps" and immediately stamp on the conker. Should its owner first shout "no stamps" stamps is canceled.

A winning conker can go on to do battle with other conkers, each victory adding to the conker's score. A conker which has won one battle is called a "one-er", two battles a "two-er" and so on.
